The logline for the limited drama reads, “Based on a true story, the limited drama explores the life of Michael Peterson, his sprawling North Carolina family, and the suspicious death of his wife, Kathleen Peterson.”
In 2001, Peterson was apprehended and charged with Kathleen’s murder. In the beginning, he claimed that her death was caused by a fall down the stairs while delirious as a result of a combination of alcohol and Valium intoxication. The autopsy report, on the other hand, disproves Peterson’s claims, concluding that she died as a result of multiple injuries that she sustained. Multiple blows to the back of the head with a blunt object were among the assaults she suffered.
Showrunners Antonio Campos (The Devil All the Time, The Sinner) and Maggie Cohn (American Crime Story) are co-creators of The Staircase, which is written and directed by them both. A co-production between HBO Max and Annapurna Television, with Campos and Cohn serving as executive producers, The Max Original is currently in production.
