13stream is the first website to release an exclusive trailer for the upcoming drama film Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle. The film was co-written by Arthur Harari, who also directed it, and Vincent Poymiro, who worked with Bernard Cendron on the screenplay. On December 13, the film will be made available for the first time via video-on-demand.
The film’s synopsis describes it as “a drama based on the true story of Hiroo Onoda, the legendary Japanese soldier who spent 30 years in the Philippine jungle, refusing to surrender because he was convinced World War II had not ended.” Onoda spent those 30 years in the jungle because he was convinced the war was still going on.
Onoda will not believe even the recordings of his brother’s voice imploring him to give up or the magazine articles left for him in the jungle, meant to enlighten him about a world that had changed dramatically since 1944. Leaves and bark camouflage him, and he shoots water buffalo for sustenance. (His answer consisted of insane conspiracy beliefs that the adversary was fabricating news stories.)
Is it more accurate to characterize Onoda as a self-deluded fanatic or a model of patriotic virtue? The guy who became a modern myth and the source of inspiration for Werner Herzog’s recently published novel is revealed in his complicated glory in this moving and epic play by Aziz Harari.
