Disney+ and Lucasfilm have announced the imminent launch of a new documentary that focuses on the development of the Ewan McGregor-led Star Wars miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi. This announcement comes after two months have passed since the conclusion of the six-episode run of Obi-Wan Kenobi. As part of the festivities taking place on September 8 for Disney+ Day, a documentary with the working title Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return is slated to make its world premiere on that day.
Along with the announcement came the release of the film’s official trailer, which you can view below. The trailer features commentary from the cast and director Deborah Chow, in which they talk about the meaningful process of bringing the much-loved character back to the Star Wars universe. Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return Trailer
Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return will reportedly include behind-the-scenes material that has never been seen before, focusing on the colorful personal stories and significant moments shared by the cast members. It will also put the spotlight on the “aspect of filmmaking that makes Star Wars so unique—the respect and passion for the generation-spanning history and the beloved characters,” according to the show’s description.
According to the summary, the documentary “This Insightful Documentary Explores the Return of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker to the Screen” investigates the return of Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to their respective famous roles as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.
“Director Deborah Chow, cast members, and crew members reflect on their journey to tell a new story with legendary Star Wars characters Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and Princess Leia, while also introducing new heroes and villains into the saga along the way,” the article reads.
The events of Obi-Wan Kenobi take place ten years after the dramatic occurrences of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, in which Obi-Wan Kenobi suffered his greatest loss: the fall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who became the evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. Obi-Wan Kenobi begins after these events.
Franchise newcomers such as Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit), Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals), Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), Rupert Friend (Homeland), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Godzilla: King of the Monsters), Sung Kang (F9: The Fast Saga), Simone Kessell (Of Kings and Prophets), and Benny Safdie will be joining the returning Star Wars cast members (Uncut Gems).
