In the 1960s, an infamous study on gender health was carried out at UCLA, and one of the participants was a transgender lady who went by the alias Agnes. Her ingenious manipulation of the study to obtain gender-affirming medical care led to her becoming a fascinating and recognized person in the history of transgender people.

In this innovative cinematic exercise that blends fiction and nonfiction, director Chase Joynt (No Ordinary Man) uses Agnes’s story, along with others unearthed in long-shelved case files, to widen the frame through which trans history is viewed.

He combines Agnes’s story with other transgender people who have come forward in recent years. An all-star cast of trans performers, artists, and thinkers — including Angelica Ross (Pose), Jen Richards (Mrs. Fletcher), and Zackary Drucker (Transparent) — take on vividly rendered, impeccably vintage reenactments to bring ground-breaking artifacts of trans history to life through a collaborative practice of re-imagination.

This collaborative reclamation debunks the illusion that transgender history-makers worked in solitude, giving fresh life to a lineage of collaborators and conspirators who have been forgotten for a considerable time.
