Emancipation, an upcoming thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Will Smith as an escaped slave, has just received its official trailer, which Apple Original Films released.

The film demonstrates how determined one man is to win his freedom by brazenly putting himself in harm’s way to stay alive and see his goal through. The movie is scheduled to debut in theaters on December 2, followed by its introduction on Apple TV+ the following week, December 9.

Antoine Fuqua is in charge of the direction of Emancipation, and William N. Collage was the writer of the screenplay. Smith is joined by Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor, Mustafa Shakir, Steven Ogg, Grant Harvey, Ronnie Gene Bivens, Jayson Warner Smith, Jabbar Lewis, Michael Luwoye, Aaron Moten, and Imani Pullum. Also included in the cast are Ronnie Gene Bivens and Jayson Warner Smith.

According to the synopsis, the film tells the triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom.

One image, which came to be known as “The Scourged Back,” depicts Peter’s bare back after it had been mutilated by a whipping delivered by his enslavers. This image ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery.
