Margaret Brown, a documentary filmmaker known for her work on “The Order of Myths” and “The Great Invisible,” travels back to Mobile, Alabama, her hometown, to document the search for and historic discovery of the ship known as The Clotilda. This vessel is believed to have been the last known ship to arrive in the United States illegally carrying enslaved Africans. After a century of secrecy and rumors, the ship’s discovery in 2019 draws attention to the descendant community of Africatown. It also paints an affecting portrait of a community that is actively struggling with and fighting to preserve its heritage while examining what justice looks like in the modern day.
