Andy Murnane and Tanielu Leaosavai’i, also known as Brotha D, were both students at Manukau Polytechnic when they founded Dawn Raid. They began as a bootleg t-shirt business and a hip-hop night at a local bar in Otara, New Zealand, and eventually grew into the influential Dawn Raid Entertainment empire. From meager beginnings to fame and money, Andy, Brotha D, and the other artists of Dawn Raid gave voice to a disenfranchised Pacific community.

For this community, the violence of the dawn raids, which had occurred twenty years before, was still raw. However, Andy and Brotha D’s arrogance and disdain for the established order, which propelled them to the top of the industry, ultimately led to the downfall of their empire.

The collapse of Dawn Raid Entertainment was precipitated by a number of factors, including unpaid tax debts, rifts between artists, and a sense of betrayal and failure. However, not before they had established an incalculable musical legacy that would pave the way for future New Zealand artists to reach international audiences, they were able to create this legacy.
